It was an emotional moment on Sunday, July 24, as some 50 participants in the 2016 Tour of Hope crossed the finish line in Moncton after cycling a total distance of 650 kilometres in three days.
The Tour of Hope, presented by National Bank, is a fundraiser in support of the Tree of Hope Campaign. Proceeds will be used to purchase specialized equipment and to fund continued training for subspeciality teams at the Dr.-Léon-Richard Oncology Centre, to support cancer research efforts, to upgrade the Mgr.-Henri-Cormier Lodge, and to promote healthy living. Last year, the Tour of Hope raised $109,000.
“What an incredible experience!,” exclaimed Carole Williams, Tour of Hope Co-chair. “Over the past three days, we have had a lot of wonderful moments. Although it was difficult both physically and mentally, we knew we were doing it for a great cause. We all know someone who is fighting or who has fought cancer, and our thoughts were with them as we cycled around the province.”
Réjean Després, Vice President, Personal and Commercial Banking, Atlantic Canada at National Bank and Tour of Hope Co-chair, participated in the Tour of Hope for the first time this year.
“Wow, words cannot describe how I feel at the end of this big adventure around the province. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I will admit that it wasn’t easy, but when you stop and think about those fighting cancer, we are fortunate to be physically able to take on such a challenge. On behalf of all the cyclists, I would like to sincerely thank the individuals and businesses that made donations as well as the volunteers who helped us reach our goals.”
According to Claude Paré, Vice President of the Tree of Hope’s Provincial Cabinet, the 2016 Tour of Hope was a resounding success.
“My hat goes off to the cyclists, who really gave their all to accomplish this impressive feat and cover 650 kilometres in three days! Their contribution, as well as that of volunteers and sponsors, is greatly appreciated and will make an enormous difference in achieving the Tree of Hope Campaign’s objectives. A huge thanks to all of you!”
